The tomb of Jesus is at risk of ‘catastrophic’ collapse as it lies on an unsteady foundation riddled with hidden tunnels, channels and structures, researchers have warned.

The Edicule, a shrine that tradition says houses the cave where Jesus was buried and rose to heaven, was recently transformed by a $4 million (£3.2 million) improvement project and is being unveiled to the public for the first time today.

But researchers have warned the ancient site is at a ‘very real risk’ of collapsing after a survey using ground-penetrating radar and robotic cameras found evidence that the Edicule’s foundations lie on the rubble of forgotten architecture.
